True Or False: Licorice Lowers Testosterone

True Or False: Licorice Lowers Testosterone

When it comes to boosting your testosterone levels, it’s not only important to understand what to eat…

But you need to know what foods to stay away from as well…

And today I’m going to tell you about a “sweet treat” that should have warning labels for your testosterone written all over the package…

Licorice.

Licorice lowers testosterone.

Later on in this article, I'm going to share with you a trick you can do each morning to naturally boost testosterone levels (even if you eat licorice)...

But before we get there, let's take a closer look at licorice and how it affects testosterone levels.

How Licorice Lowers Testosterone

The main compound in licorice is called glycyrrhizic acid…

And unfortunately, it can’t be removed from licorice because glycyrrhizic acid is what gives licorice its unique taste.

In one study recorded in Experimental and Clinical Endocrinology & Diabetes, one week of “licorice treatment” was found to reduce serum testosterone levels by 26%…

And another study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, saw the same effect after giving seven healthy men 7g of licorice a day through candy tablets…

After only four days, the total testosterone levels for the subjects dropped from 740ng/dL to 484ng/dL…

Which is a massive drop in testosterone!

It makes me wonder if these men knew what they were getting into before the study began.

The reason why licorice lowers testosterone was hypothesized in a 2001 study that concluded glycyrrhizic acid...

Interferes with 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases— and as a result, inhibits the conversion of androstenedione into testosterone.

In other words...

Licorice actually prevents your body from producing testosterone…

But that’s not the only way that licorice lowers testosterone…

How Licorice Increases Cortisol

Just when you licorice couldn't get any worse for testosterone levels... it does.

Because licorice also elevates your cortisol levels

And cortisol is a natural testosterone killer in itself.

Because as cortisol levels increase, testosterone levels decrease, and vice versa.

Published in the Journal of Human Hypertension, a 2003 study tested the effects of 4-week licorice treatments on healthy volunteers and patients…

Which led to a huge spike in cortisol levels…

Or in other words, they weren’t healthy anymore.

And it’s no surprise that the subjects in the study saw an increase in blood pressure as a result of this increase in stress hormone levels.

Why It Matters

You may be wondering why this matters at all.

Well, the fact that licorice lowers testosterone is a big deal if you’re a licorice lover…

But it’s also a big deal if you think you’re indifferent to licorice because well, you probably aren’t as indifferent as you’d like to be…

Licorice is used in breath fresheners, flavoring agents, teas, over the counter medications, and loads of Chinese medicines.

It’s found in shampoos and skin treatments as well.

In a sense, it’s everywhere.

So do your testosterone levels a favor and keep an eye out for licorice, or its main ingredient glycyrrhizic acid, on product labels.

Because licorice lowers testosterone and boosts cortisol it can cause side effects like

  • Lowered sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Infertility
  • Increased body fat
  • Man boobs
  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Mood swings
  • Hot flashes
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep apnea
  • Depression
  • Hypertension
  • And much more…
